of Anaea.
Also known as Olbian of Anaea, Albian (Olbian), Bishop of Anaea, Saint Albian, Bishop of Aneium

Tone 4
By sharing in the ways of the Apostles, / you became a successor to their throne. / Through the practice of virtue, you found the way to divine contemplation, O inspired one of God; / by teaching the word of truth without error, you defended the Faith, / even to the shedding of your blood. / Hieromartyr Albian, entreat Christ God to save our souls.
A Bishop's
Steadfast Witness
Saint Albian served as bishop of the ancient city of Anaea in Asia Minor during the reign of Diocletian. When persecution threatened all Christians, he refused to deny Christ by offering sacrifice to idols. Along with his faithful disciple, he endured torture and was condemned to death in a blazing furnace, receiving the martyr's crown and joining the great cloud of witnesses who remained steadfast unto death.
Early years
Saint Albian lived during the third and early fourth centuries in Anaea, a city of considerable importance in Asia Minor. Though details of his birth and early life are not preserved in the hagiographical traditions, his elevation to the episcopate shows that he had grown in virtue and faith to become a worthy shepherd of Christ's flock. He assumed leadership of the Christian community of Anaea during a time of relative peace for the Church, serving faithfully in his pastoral ministry.
In the Church
Saint Albian was bishop of the city of Aneium in the Aseian district. As a bishop in a major see of the Roman province of Asia Prima, he would have been responsible for the spiritual care of the Christians in his region, ordaining clergy, administering the sacraments, and leading the community in prayer and witness. His episcopal office made him a particular target when the persecution began, as the imperial authorities sought to eliminate the leadership of the Christian Church.
When persecution against Christians under the emperor Diocletian and his co-ruler Maximian intensified around 304 AD, Saint Albian faced a critical test of his faith. Rather than compromise the Gospel or encourage apostasy, he stood firm in his confession of Christ as the one true God worthy of worship.
Later years
Saint Albian was ordered to offer sacrifice to idols under the threat of death, but he confessed his faith in Christ and refused to serve idols. His courage inspired at least one of his disciples to remain faithful as well. The authorities, viewing his refusal as rebellion against the empire itself, subjected him to severe torture.
They tortured him with red-hot irons and beat him mercilessly, but he remained unyielding. Throughout his suffering, Saint Albian did not waver or seek to escape through compromise. They tortured his disciple with him, and he also remained faithful to the Lord Jesus Christ. Both holy martyrs were sentenced to death and thrown into a red-hot oven, in which they died, receiving the crowns of martyrdom. His martyrdom stands as a powerful testimony to the grace of God working in those who choose death rather than betray Christ.
Legacy and veneration
Saint Albian's memory was preserved in the liturgical traditions of the Eastern Orthodox Church, and he is commemorated annually on May 4, his feast day. He is remembered as Hieromartyr Albian (Olbian), Bishop of Anaea in Asia Minor, and his disciples, who suffered during the years 284-303 (the traditional dating range of the Diocletianic persecution).
Through his intercessions, faithful Orthodox Christians honor his courage and draw encouragement to remain steadfast in their own struggles. His example demonstrates that even in the face of imperial power and physical torment, the martyr's witness transcends earthly pain and conquers through faith in the resurrection. Saint Albian is venerated throughout the Eastern Orthodox Church as a hieromartyr whose blood cries out with the blood of all the martyrs, testifying to the power of Christ's salvation over death itself.
Additional writings
Life and Episcopate
Saint Albian was bishop of the city of Aneium in the Aseian district, and suffered for Christ about the year 304 in a persecution against Christians under the emperor Diocletian and his co-ruler Maximian. Anaea is located in the coastal village of Soğucak situated 8 kilometres to the south of Kuşadası in Aydın Province, Turkey. Anaea was important enough in the Roman province of Asia Prima to become a suffragan bishopric of its capital Ephesus's Metropolitan Archbishopric. As a bishop in this established see, Saint Albian served the Christian community during the early years of the Church in Asia Minor.
Martyrdom During the Diocletianic Persecution
Saint Albian was ordered to offer sacrifice to idols under the threat of death, but he confessed his faith in Christ and refused to serve idols. They tortured him with red-hot irons and beat him mercilessly, but he remained unyielding. They tortured his disciple with him, and he also remained faithful to the Lord Jesus Christ. Both holy martyrs were sentenced to death and thrown into a red-hot oven, in which they died, receiving the crowns of martyrdom. Through his steadfast confession and martyric death, Saint Albian became a witness to Christ during one of the most severe persecutions the early Church faced.
Veneration and Legacy
Saint Albian is commemorated as a hieromartyr—a bishop and priest who shed his blood for the Faith. His feast day of May 4 places him among the great martyrs of the Diocletianic persecution and a succession of illustrious witnesses to Christ. Through his intercessions, the faithful are encouraged to remain steadfast in their confession of Christ, trusting in the grace that enables martyrs to overcome all earthly suffering.
The traditional kontakion specific to Saint Albian as found in the Eastern Orthodox liturgical sources is not readily available in standard service books. However, the kontakion for his feast day draws on the general themes of martyrdom and intercession common to hieromartyrs, following the patterns established in the Church's hymnography for bishops and priests who shed their blood for Christ.
O Hieromartyr Albian, you were clothed with the grace of the episcopal office and adorned with the courage of the martyrs. Having remained unyielding under torture and holding fast to your confession of Christ our Saviour, you received the crown of martyrdom. We entreat you: remember us who honor your holy memory, and by your prayers before Christ God, obtain for us the strength to confess the Faith with boldness, to endure all trials with patience, and to love Christ above all earthly things. By your intercessions, guard us from the snares of the enemy and lead us to that eternal glory which awaits all the faithful. Amen.
