Hieromartyr Amos the Priest.
Also known as New Martyr Amos, Amos the New Hieromartyr, Hieromartyr Amos Ivanov, Father Amos, Presbyter Amos
A Russian Orthodox priest and New Hieromartyr of the Soviet period, Amos served in the Yenisei province and was executed during the Great Purge of the 1930s for his unwavering faith in Christ.
Tone 4
O ye holy hierarchs, royal passion-bearers and pastors,
monks and laymen, ye countless new-martyrs, and confessors,
men, women and children,
flowers of the spiritual meadow of Russia,
who blossomed forth wondrously in time of grievous persecutions
bearing good fruit for Christ in your endurance:
Entreat Him as the One who planted you,
that He deliver His people from godless and evil men,
and that the Church of Russia and all the world
be made steadfast through your blood and suffering,
unto the salvation of our souls.
The Holy
Sufferer and Witness
Hieromartyr Amos served as a priest in the distant Yenisei province of Russia during the early Soviet period. When the Communist regime unleashed systematic persecution against the Orthodox Church and its clergy, Father Amos refused to abandon his priesthood or deny Christ. He was martyred for the faith during the Great Purge of the 1930s and is now commemorated among the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia.
Early years
Details of Father Amos's early life—his birth, family, education, and formation for priesthood—are not widely documented in available sources. What is known is that he was ordained to the priesthood and came to serve in the Yenisei province, a vast region in Siberia. The priesthood at that time in rural Russia was often a modest calling, with clergy serving scattered communities of faithful Orthodox believers despite the hardships of geography and climate.
In the Church
Hieromartyr Amos Ivanov, presbyter, served as a priest in the Yenisei province. As a priest, he would have celebrated the Divine Liturgy, heard confessions, administered the sacraments, and provided pastoral care to his flock. In the Eastern Orthodox tradition, a hieromartyr is a martyr who was a bishop or priest.
His ministry took place during an era of unprecedented hostility toward the Church. Throughout the history of the Soviet Union, Soviet authorities suppressed and persecuted various forms of Christianity. Soviet Marxist-Leninist policy consistently advocated the control, suppression, and ultimately, the elimination of religious beliefs, and the Communist Party destroyed churches, synagogues, and mosques, and executed religious leaders.
Later years
Father Amos maintained his priestly vocation even as the Soviet state intensified its campaign against the Orthodox Church. From 1917-1940, persecution of the Orthodox Church in Russia began, with 130,000 priests arrested, 95,000 of whom were executed by firing squad.
During 1936-37, many Russian Orthodox clerics died in Joseph Stalin's Great Purge. Amos the priest is commemorated as a New Hieromartyr on June 15, the date of his martyrdom. Like so many of his brother priests, he was arrested, condemned, and executed for his refusal to renounce Christ and abandon his sacred ministry.
Legacy and veneration
Hieromartyr Amos was a Holy Sufferer for Christ and His Church from among the New Martyrs and confessors of the Russian Church. His memory is preserved in the calendar of the Eastern Orthodox Church, where he is commemorated annually on June 15, together with other priests and hierarchs who gave their lives during the Soviet persecutions.
The New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia were Orthodox Faithful who suffered during the Soviet period (1917 to 1991) for their faith. The Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia glorified the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia in 1981. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Russian Church began glorifying some of the New Martyrs, beginning with the Grand Duchess Elizabeth, Metropolitan Vladimir of Kiev, and Metropolitan Benjamin of Petrograd in 1992.
Father Amos stands as a witness to generations of Orthodox Christians of the power of faith and the grace of martyrdom. His sacrifice reminds the faithful that neither tribulation, prison, nor death can separate those who trust in Christ from the love of God.
Additional writings
Hieromartyr Amos the Priest stands among the countless New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia, those faithful servants of the Orthodox Church who witnessed to Christ through suffering and death during the Soviet persecutions of the twentieth century. He was a holy sufferer for Christ and His Church from among the New Martyrs and confessors of the Russian Church, serving as a priest in the Yenisei province.
The New Martyrs and Confessors of the Russian Church are saints of the Russian Orthodox Church martyred or persecuted after the October Revolution of 1917. During the purges of 1937 and 1938, church documents record that 168,300 Russian Orthodox clergy were arrested, of whom 106,300 were shot. In this terrible season of persecution, Father Amos joined countless other priests and hierarchs who chose to maintain their priestly ministry and Orthodox faith despite the mortal danger posed by the atheistic Soviet regime.
The Yenisei province, located in Siberia, was a vast and remote region of the Russian Empire. This region includes more than four hundred photographs of daily life in Yenisei Province in the late tsarist period, depicting the challenging landscape and faithful Orthodox communities where Father Amos labored. As a priest in this distant province, he would have served the spiritual needs of the scattered faithful in rural churches and communities.
Like thousands of other Orthodox clergy during the Great Purge, these priests were killed or suffered gravely because of their faith and their refusal to compromise their faith, to cooperate with the new revolutionary government, or to renounce their faith in Christ. Father Amos remained steadfast to the end, witnessing to the saving power of Christ in the face of an enemy that sought to exterminate religion itself from Russian soil.
Tone 2
O ye new passion-bearers of Russia,
who have with your confession finished the course of this earth,
receiving boldness through your sufferings:
Beseech Christ Who strengthened you,
that we also, whenever the hour of trial find us
may receive the gift of courage from God.
For ye are a witness to us who venerate your struggle,
that neither tribulation, prison, nor death
can separate us from the love of God.
O Holy Hieromartyr Amos, witness of Christ and confessor of the Orthodox Faith, accept our humble prayers on behalf of those who honor your sacred memory. Having steadfastly endured persecution and martyrdom in the days of godless oppression, you have won an incorruptible crown in the Kingdom of Heaven. Pray for us sinners, that we may be granted courage in our faith and constancy in our confession of Christ, our True God and Savior. Intercede also for the Russian land and for all Orthodox Christians in times of trial, that by your prayers we may be strengthened and preserved in the true faith unto the end of our lives. Amen.
Carry the tradition with you.
